GAIN A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF MEDICAL TERMS AND DESCRIPTIONS

Course Content

There are 10 lessons in this module as follows:

1. Scope and Nature of Medical Terminology - Origins of words, structure of words, prefix examples, suffix examples.

2. Anatomical Structure - location of organs, brain structure, body position and symmetry, acronyms, symbols/shorthand used in medicine.

3. Medical Equipment and Processes - Diagnostic and surgical procedures and equipment, storage and handling of medicines, sterilizing equipment, bacteria, common bacteria encountered in a medical setting, types of wounds, problems resulting from wounds, treating wounds, cleaning wounds, electrolytes,

4. Pharmacological Terminology - Medicinal terminology, including alternative and herbal, allergens, alphablockers, anthelmintics, antibiotics, antitussives, beta blockers, carcinogens, cathartics, expectorants, hormone like effects, nervines, vasodilators, over the counter and prescription drugs, terminology for over the counter and prescription drugs, antipsychotic drugs, antidepressants.

5. Musculoskeletal System - Major muscles, musculature, the relationship between muscles and skeleton, bone and joint problems, disorders of the musculoskeletal system,

6. Cardiovascular, Lymphatic and Immune Systems - Parts of the body, the heart, circulation, systole and diastole, disorders of the cardiovascular system, heart disease, heart attack, arrhythmias, abnormal blood pressure, lymphatic system, immunity, lympathic organs, leukocytes,  leukocyte diagnostic terminology, vaccination, immunity, types of immunity, how vaccines work, types of vaccine, disorders of the immune system.

7. Respiratory and Reproductive Systems - The respiratory system, the lungs, respiration, pulmonary circulation, gas exchange, carbon monoxide poisoning, diagnostic procedures for lungs and airways, respiratory disorders, reproductive system- male and female, pregnancy, parturition, casearean section, VBAC and multiple gestation, premature birth and miscarriage, reproductive disorders,

8. Digestive and Excretory Systems - Digestive system, renal system, kidneys, ureters and bladder, urethra, disorders of the digestive and renal systems.

9. Integumentary System (Skin) - Integumentary system, parts of the body, structure of the integument, disorders, diagnostic procedures.

10.Nervous and Sensory Systems - Parts of the body, disorders of the nervous system, disorders of the sensory system, diagnostic procedures for nervous disorders and sensory disorders, terminology.

Duration: 100 hrs

What qualification will I achieve for completing this course?

This is an individual module course. The individual module courses are 100 hour long usually and can be taken on their own or as part of a larger program of study.

If you wish to take an individual module course as a stand alone course, you can elect to sit an optional exam at the end of it.

If you successfully pass the exam and all assignments, you will receive a Statement of Attainment. You can take examinations at a time and location to suit you. If you enrol, you will be sent further information on how to arrange examinations at the end of the course.

If you do not wish to take the exam, you will receive a Course Completion letter when you have passed all assignments.

There is an assignment at the end of each lesson. So for example, if an individual module course contains ten lessons, you will need to complete ten assignments. Assignments can be sent to us via email, post or fax.

Other qualifications, such as certificates, diplomas etc may require examinations to be taken as part of the overall assessment process.

  • Identify the meaning of words that describe general anatomical features, including disorders.
  • Identify the meaning of words which describe medical tools, equipment and procedures.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe pharmacological terms.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe physiological and anatomical features in the musculoskeletal system, including disorders.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe physiological and anatomical features in the cardiovascular, lymphatic and immune systems, including disorders.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe physiological and anatomical features in the respiratory and reproductive systems, including disorders.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe physiological and anatomical features in the digestive and excretory systems, including disorders.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe physiological and anatomical features in the skin, including disorders.
  • Identify the meaning of words that describe physiological and anatomical features in the nervous and sensory systems, including disorders.

Example Assignment Questions

Define these terms

Create additional terminology using prefixes and suffixes from the following medical terms (3 new terms for each):

· Cardiologist

· Atherosclerosis

· Arrhythmia

· Phlebotomist

· Stenosis

Select 1 lymph disease and one cardiovascular disease not discussed in the lesson. Write a paragraph on each, describing the symptoms/cause/treatment using as much medical terminology as you are able.

Look at the brief below and answer the questions that follow. Simplify the complicated terminology in your answers.

A 55 year old male complains of abdominal discomfort after meals, especially, high fat meals. At those times he also has aching in his right shoulder and back. An ultrasound of the upper abdomen revealed cholelithiasis. A consult with a gastroenterologist determined that cholelithotripsy was considered but it was decided that a laparoscopic cholecystectomy would be the first procedure attempted. If complications were encountered then an open cholecystectomy would be performed.

Significant medical history: patient had a coronary angiography performed at age 46 following suspected myocardial infarct.

a. What is the patient’s current medical problem?

b. Explain the symptoms he was experiencing and their likely cause.

How Long will it take to complete the course?

This obviously varies from student to student. Some students will have more time for study than others. Some students may work quicker than others, so it is an individual thing. We estimate that most students will take, for example, 4 – 6 months to complete a 100 hour individual module, but we allow up to 12 months for you to complete it.
