THE CORE MODULES
Marine Studies I
The Marine Studies module comprises 9 lessons. Students will learn about the ecology of marine systems - nutrient cycles and marine plants - as well as broader environmental factors, such as marine weather (such as the El Nino, Thermocline, and Gulf streams). The module includes lessons on shallow waters and reefs, and specific marine life such as Arthropods, Shellfish and Crustaceans, and Cephalopods and Cluepeoids. Students will also study the different types of fish (Sharks, Eels, Rays), marine mammals (Dolphins, Whales), Turtles, sea birds, and Sea Snakes. To complete the module, we consider the products derived from sea life, and the human impact on marine environments.
Marine Studies II
The module comprises 10 lessons concerned with the different organisms, plant and animal life which exist within the marine environment. Studying the characteristics of different animal and plant life will increase the students understanding of how they are adapted to their roles and how these fit in with the ecology of the marine environment. The course also looks at the formation of the rich environment of coral reefs.
Learn about marine life and ecotourism with ACS Distance Education Ecotourism Management is a 9 lesson module which considers what ecotourism is and what considerations need to be viewed in terms of the impact of recreation on the environment. Students will learn about the relevant legal, as well as ethical, issues and the codes of practice pertinent to the management of an ecotourism operation. As well as the scope of ecotourism, builds upon the basic elements by looking at the types of destinations that ecotourists want, and the practicalities of managing a tour desk and determining suitable accommodation and catering facilities. In addition to the legal elements that need to be incorporated (e.g. in destinations such as national parks), the module considers other important elements such safety strategies and risk planning. Ecotourism Management is then completed with a special project where students will produce a detailed plan for arranging an ecotourism activity.
To complete the Proficiency Award, you are also required to complete a workplace project lasting 200 hours.
