LESSON AIMS

  • Compare different types of greenhouses to better match the plants to be grown inside the greenhouse to be built.
  • Explain the equipment and measuring devices (manual and automated) used inside a greenhouse to help grow plants more effectively.
  •  Explain options for reducing the impact of pests and diseases on plants grown inside greenhouses.
  •  Detect and control the temperature within an optimal growing range for plants being grown in a greenhouse.
  •  Control water in a greenhouse, including irrigation and humidity.
  •  Control nutrient levels in a greenhouse at optimal levels for plant growth and health.

Meet some of our academics

Jacinda Cole (Horticulturist)Landscaper, Horticulturist, Psychologist, Builder, Garden Writer. Studied construction and surveying at Bristol Polytec, B.Sc. at University of Northumbria (1988) and Psychology in Australia. She completed a Cert.Garden Design in 95. In the mid 1990's she worked as Landscape Manager and Garden Designer for the Chelsea Gardener in London and in 97 commenced her own business as a garden designer; operating at first in London, then in Australia. She has worked for ACS as a tutor, course counsellor and writer since 2001, alongside her own freelance work as a horticultural consultant and writer. Jacinda has co authored many books and written hundreds of articles published in gardening magazines including Home Grown, Your Backyard and Garden Guide.
Marie Beerman B.Sc.,M.Hort.Marie has been involved in horticulture since 2003. She completed a Masters degree in Horticulture at Hannover University in Germany in 2007, and has worked with ACS since 2011 She has co-authored of several ebooks including one on Roses and has a very sound knowledge and experience with horticultural science and research ranging from plant taxonomy and plant breeding to pest, disease and soil management.,
John Mason (Horticulturist)Horticulturist, Nurseryman, Landscaper, Garden Writer, Parks Manager and Consultant. Over 45 years experience; working in Australia and the UK. He is one of the most widely published garden writers in the world; author of more than 100 books and editor for 4 different gardening magazines. John has been recognised by his peers being made a fellow of the Institute of Horticulture in the UK, as well as by the Australian Institute of Horticulture.
