Herb Culture BHT114
There are 12 lessons in the module.  After revising some of the main elements from the first herbs module, students will study some specific herbs in more detail (such as Lamiaceae, including sage and balm, Liliaceae, including chives and aloe vera, and Rosaceae, rose and strawberry).  The last 4 lessons in the module focus on herb gardens, nurseries, and farming.

Scented Plants BHT229
Scented Plants is an 8 lesson module.  The module covers the system of plant identification and characteristics, followed by lessons on culture and propagation.  Students studies will then be concentrated on types of scented plants grown and their uses in fresh or dried form and in cooking.


Growing Lavender BHT228
Growing Lavender is a 10 lesson module.  The lessons provide a detailed insight into the different types and classifications of lavender.  Students will learn about the propagation and growing of lavender.  As well as learning about lavender products and commercial uses for lavender, the module includes sections which will increase the student's awareness of good horticultural practices.
Crops I (Outdoor Plant Production) BHT112
This is a 10 lesson module.  The module provides a broad overview for the production of commercial crops.  Starting with lessons that look at crop production systems and soils and nutrition, the module is then divided into sections which concentrate of different crop types - tree fruits and soft fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, and other crops including herbs and nuts.  

Medicinal Herbs BHT227
The Medicinal Herbs module comprises 8 lessons.  Students will learn about the history of the use of herbs for medicinal purposes and the different types and how these can be cultivated and propagated.  The module looks at a variety of different herbs and the types of remedies that can be produced with them.  A useful lesson on harmful plants informs students of what plants to avoid.  The module finishes with a lesson on crop production and the management of a market garden.

Aromatherapy VHT104
An 8 lesson module, which looks at the history of aromatherapy, how it works and the chemistry of essential oils.  As well as learning about the extraction and use of essential oils, a section of the module covers safe practice and the danger of some types of oil.

Culinary Herbs VHT242
This 8 lesson module focuses on the use of herbs in cooking.  A broad range of herb varieties are covered in the module, and students will learn about these and their uses.

Workplace Project
To complete the Proficiency Award, you are also required to complete a workplace project lasting 200 hours.  

There are 4 options available to you to satisfy this requirement.  The options will be different dependant upon whether or not you currently work within the industry.  Don’t worry if you are not sure how to proceed at this stage, as your tutor will be there to discuss how to proceed and help you every step of the way.

To complete the course -
There is an assignment at the end of each lesson. So if there are ten lessons in a course, there will be ten assignments.

Each of the modules mentioned can also be studied as a standalone course if you prefer.

John has been recognised by his peers being made a fellow of the Institute of Horticulture in the UK, as well as by the Australian Institute of Horticulture.
Maggi BrownMaggi is regarded as an expert in organic growing throughout the UK, having worked for two decades as Education Officer at the world renowned Henry Doubleday Research Association. She has been active in education, environmental management and horticulture across the UK for more than three decades. Some of Maggi's qualifications include RHS Cert. Hort. Cert. Ed. Member RHS Life Member Garden Organic (HDRA) .
Diana Cole (Horticulturist)Horticulturist, Permaculturist, Landscaper, Environmentalist. Holds a Diploma in Horticulture, degree in geography, permaculture certificate and various other qualifications. Between 1985 and 94, Diana was a task leader with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. Since 2001 she has been chairperson of the Friends of Mellor Park (with Stockport MDC). From 2005 she has worked exclusively in horticulture as proprietor of her own garden design and consultancy business in and around Derbyshire; and at the same time as part time manager of a small garden centre. Diana has been an enthusiastic and very knowledgeable tutor with ACS since 2008.
