Working With Animals

Opportunities and what is required

Animals are much loved creatures of our world and there are an extensive amount of species; from the small ant to the large elephant, and from the hairy bear to the hairless lizard. We have animals in captivity, animals in the wild and we even keep animals as pets. Species change from land to sea, inflight and underground. Many people across the globe have favourite species which they love, and also species which they don’t love. Some people like dogs, some like cats, some like reptiles and some like fish. Animals really are the wonders of our world!

With this vast amount of different species and the people who have a love and passion for animals, there are so many opportunities to work with them. Charities rescue and rehabilitate wild animals, then release them when they are in full health. Other charities rescue and re-home unwanted pets. Zoo keepers look after wild captive animals kept for conservation and education. Dog and cat behaviourists assist owners in understanding their pet and how to make their lives better. Veterinary staff work hands on to provide health for our beloved pets and animals. We have farmers, groomers, pet sitters, conservationists, zoologists and breeders. All of which require passionate people working in the industry.

So, what type of person does it take to work with animals. Of course, like many careers, a person is required to be reliable, punctual and responsible, however there are a few more traits which can help:

  • Desire – a desire to work with animals.
  • Passion – it is important to be passionate about working with animals as some of these roles don’t pay financially well.
  • Kind and compassionate – it is important to care for both people and animals.
  • Willing and eager – some roles include tedious responsibilities such as cleaning faeces.
  • Hardworking – shifts may be long, however if animals require looking after you must be willing to work.
  • Knowledgeable – you must understand or be learning to understand about the species you are working with, or the role you plan to do.
