An exciting animal management course blending learning and research.

Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles.  This course looks at herpetology, wildlife management and zookeeping.

This exciting course blends distance learning and work based research and/or practice. It requires 500 hours of study which is made up of three core modules - Herpetology, Zookeeping and Wildlife Management. The practical side of the course is underlined by your completion of a 200 hour industry project/work based experience.

Work with reptiles and amphibians - learn to manage and understand their habitats.

You might think this is not possible, but many people do.  What not make your passion for herpetology into your dream job?  Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles.  This course looks at herpetology, wildlife management and zookeeping.

This course requires 500 hours of study.

WORKPLACE PROJECT
To complete this qualification, you are also required to complete a workplace project lasting 200 hours.  

There are 4 options available to you to satisfy this requirement.  The options will be different dependent upon whether or not you currently work within the industry. The project can be work experience, voluntary experience, a project you carry out, other training you have already undertaken and there are other options. Don’t worry if you are not sure how to proceed at this stage, as your tutor will be there to discuss how to proceed and help you every step of the way.



HOW THE COURSE WORKS
You can start the course at any time.

It is studied by distance learning, so you can study in the comfort of your own home. But this doesn't mean you are all alone in your studies.  Our highly qualified and friendly tutors are there to help you every step of the way.  If you have any questions at all, they are always happy to help.



HOW THE PROFICIENCY AWARD IS ASSESSED
The Proficiency Award In Herpetology, Wildlife Management And Zookeeping  requires 500 hours of study.  It is made up of three 100 hour modules and a workplace project.

To pass the course –

  1. Pass all assignments on the three 100 hour modules. There will be an assignment at the end of each lesson to submit to your tutor for marking and feedback.
  2. Pass three examinations – one on each module. These are usually taken at the end of the module and can be arranged at a time and location to suit you.
  3. Complete a Workplace Project.  The project should last around 200 hours.  There are four options available to you to satisfy this requirement.  Don’t worry if you are not sure at this stage, your tutor will be there to help you every step of the way. This includes evidence of work experience or other studies or workshops, a research project or completion of Workshop I.

Meet some of our academics

Bob James (Environmental)Bob has a unique set of qualifications and experience having worked in applied biological and environmental sciences for more than 50 years. He holds a string of tertiary qualifications in animal, plant and environmental sciences; including a Masters Degree in Environmental Science. He has worked as a tutor with ACS since 1995. Bob has worked as a teacher, research scientist and consultant for both government and private enterprise undertaking jobs ranging from environmental surveys to waste disposal.
Dr Robert Browne (Environmental)Robert has an outstanding international reputation in Conservation, Environmental Management and Animal Science, having extensive experience across Europe, Australia, North America and central America. He has decades of experience working across subjects ranging from biodiversity and Wetland Ecology to Reptile Ecology and Animal Breeding. Zoologist, Environmental. He holds a B.Sc.(Hons) from the University of Tasmania and a Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle. In recent years he has worked with Ghent University in the Netherlands, Antwerp University in Belgium, Perth Zoo in Australia and on a major sustainability project in Belize. Robert is a widely published research scientist and a referee for more than a dozen internationally renowned scientific journals. Robert brings a very comprehensive a unique experience to the school and provides our students an opportunity to learn from one of the worlds leading environmental and wildlife scientists.
Barbara Seguel B.Sc. M.Sc.Agricultural science graduate, biologist, marine scientist, aquaculturist and educator. Barbara has worked on farms, in ecotourism, education and publishing. She is widely travelled, having been educated in both California and Chile; and having worked in Hawaii, Mexico, Chile, New Zealand, and Australia.
Dr. Gareth PearceGraduated from the University of Nottingham in 1982 with a B.Sc.(Hons) in Animal Science. Between 82 and 85 worked as Research Assistant and Demonstator in Animal Science at the University of Leeds. Over more than 30 years he has furthered his studies, obtaining eight significant university qualifications including degrees in Veterinary Science, Wildlife Conservation and Animal Behaviour. Gareth has significant teaching experience around the world as a faculty member at eight different universities including Associate Professor at Murdoch University and Director of Studies in Veterinary Science at Cambridge University. He has over 100 prestigious research papers published, and enjoys an outstanding international reputation in the fields of animal and veterinary science.
