Roald Dahl Day

Roald Dahl Day, Terrance Dicks and Encouraging Children to Read

Today is Roald Dahl Day. Roald Dahl is being celebrated throughout the world. Roald, who died in 1990, was a British novelist and short story writer. His stories can be macabre, funny, unsentimental with unexpected endings.  Even if you haven’t read the books, you may have seen films of The Witches, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. His books have sold over 250 million copies, encouraging children to find joy and love of reading.

Not all children like reading, so finding the right story is important.  Terrance Dicks is another British author who wrote many scripts and novels about Doctor Who.  He is credited with encouraging many children to read. Jenny Colgan, author, says Dicks “helped more children (especially boys) develop a lifelong love of reading than almost anyone else who's ever lived".

Author, Neil Gaiman also said he would not have written if Dicks had not shown him how to. Gaiman is famous for Coralie, Good Omens, American Gods and many others.

Reading as a child can encourage children to develop a love of literature, but also a love of writing poetry, stories and songs. Being able to write has so many applications. Today, with more and more of our lives lived online, being able to tell a story, sell a product, promote something on social media all require writing and storytelling skills.

If you would like to  encourage children (and adults) to read, why not start writing yourself?
