Learn Equine Business Management

Horses are one of the best animals to work with. They are intelligent, sociable, and accustomed to being around people. Humans have trained and managed horses for thousands of years. 

If you are someone who is familiar with horses but would like to work in a more advanced role with them, then this course gives you your opportunity to do so.

Become a horse care expert

This course is designed to equip you with a range of necessary management and horse care skills. Students undertake core studies in marketing and business operations combined with three stream units in horse care, plus two elective units of study.

Topics covered include:

Horse psychology & handling, Buying a horse, conformation, the digestive system, principles of feeding and watering, pasture management, grooming, shoeing, exercise and conditioning, stable design and general management. Coupled with a workplace project ensures that this comprehensive qualification is to a standard required in the horse industry.

EQUINE MANAGEMENT ADVANCED CERTIFICATE COURSE

  • Learn about both management and horse husbandry, both in the one course
  • Enrol any time, work at your own pace, studying from anywhere
  • Complete 700 hours of study first, to develop a solid foundation in management and communications; and then finish off with 200 hours of workplace related studies (eg. research, work experience, pbl projects, etc) where you will apply things learnt in those earlier modules; developing an appreciation and understanding of where and how your learning can be used in "real world" situations.
This course is designed as a foundation for a career working in the equine industry. Students may either
  • already work in the industry (and be looking to further develop their skills); or
  • be looking to develop, knowledge, skills, and an industry awareness, as a first step toward either developing a business, or seeking employment in the industry.
Working in this industry does involve more than just being good with horses though!
The most successful equine industry professionals are likely to be both technicians and managers. They may start as a stable hand; but stable hands do not earn much money, or progress in the industry; without moving on to a higher position such as a manager; animal health professional, business proprietor, farmer, equine products supplier or something else.
 
This course helps develop your abilities across the board, to put you in the best place for building a career, or a business.
 

EXAMS

A separate exam must be completed for each of the seven core and stream modules.
Exams can be sat anywhere in the world.
The enrolment fee does not include exam fees. An exam fee is paid prior to sitting each exam.

Meet some of our academics

Alison Pearce (animal)B.Sc.(Hons) in Animal Science. Masters Degree in Ecotourism. P.G.Cert. Ed. (Science). Alison's first job was in 1982 as a stockwoman, working with pigs in Yorkshire. Within a few years she of that she was working for the University of Western Australia as a Research Technician and instructor with their school of Agricultural Science.In 1989 she moved to Melbourne University as Unit Manager and Instructor in Animal Husbandry. By the mid 1990's she moved back to England to work in Animal Care and Veterinary Nursing at Cambridgeshire College of Agriculture. Throughout her career, Alison has developed and delivered courses in veterinary nursing and animal sciences for vocational colleges and universities in Australia, New Zealand and Australia. She has built a high level of expertise and an outstanding international reputation as an expert in animal sciences.
Dr. Gareth PearceGraduated from the University of Nottingham in 1982 with a B.Sc.(Hons) in Animal Science. Between 82 and 85 worked as Research Assistant and Demonstator in Animal Science at the University of Leeds. Over more than 30 years he has furthered his studies, obtaining eight significant university qualifications including degrees in Veterinary Science, Wildlife Conservation and Animal Behaviour. Gareth has significant teaching experience around the world as a faculty member at eight different universities including Associate Professor at Murdoch University and Director of Studies in Veterinary Science at Cambridge University. He has over 100 prestigious research papers published, and enjoys an outstanding international reputation in the fields of animal and veterinary science.
Cheryl McLardyA scientist, teacher, writer and animal scientist, with more than 20 years experience including: Sports Horse Stud Groom, Stable Manager, Yard Manager, Equine industrial Training Manager, FE Distance Learning Manager. Cheryl has travelled widely, working in England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand; and is now based in Scotland. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons), Higher National Diploma in Horse Management, and a City and Guilds Teaching Certificate.
Marius Erasmus Subsequent to completing a BSc (Agric) degree in animal science, Marius completed an honours degree in wildlife management, and a masters degree in production animal physiology. Following the Masters degree, he has worked for 9 years in the UK, and South Africa in wildlife management, dairy, beef and poultry farming.
