The education industry is very different today to what it was in the past, and the tide of change is set to continue.

Providing education today involves innovation, creativity, management, communication and technical skills.  ACS Distance Education embraced computer technology in 1981, went on the web in 1992, and was delivering training online by 1997. We've been developing, managing and delivering education for decades, and through this course we can show you how to do the same.

Course Structure and Content

Course Duration: 900 hours.

Start Date: Start at any time - study at a pace that suits you, and with full tutor support for the duration of your studies.

Content: Study four Core Modules and then choose three Elective Modules, followed by a 200 hour Workplace Project.

The Core Modules cover Management, Office Practices, Business Operations, and Marketing Foundations.

Then choose three Elective Modules from – Instructional Skills, Classroom Delivery Skills, Course Writing/Development, Delivering Distance Education, and Educational Psychology.

The Core Modules

These modules develop a capacity to better manage yourself and others in an educational context. Although generic in their delivery, the modules are designed to offer lots of opportunity to relate set tasks and assignments to an educational context.

Management VBS105
A lack of good management can seriously impact upon the viability of a company or enterprise.  This 7 lesson module explores the facets that contribute towards good management.  Students will consider the structures of different organisations and look at different theories and practices of management.  Managers will face different challenges and the module will take them through different styles of management and how to address, resolve, and act upon problems.  From taking the decision to employ the people most suited to roles and the company culture, to determining the best ways to managing staff, this module aims to provide a complete overview of the critical elements of management.

Office Practices VBS102
For a business to function correctly on a day to day basis, it is vital that offices and departments operate efficiently, with well- motivated staff who can provide the appropriate support for the business.  This 8 lesson module looks at core areas which contribute to the smooth running of an office.  Lessons include verbal and instant communications – face to face, inter-employee and with clients, and electronically; written communications – such as the writing of business letters and reports, and memorandums; the use of electronic mediums – organising data, and use of software; how to make the best use of office space; health and safety considerations.  This module will provide the student with practical skills and knowledge that they can apply directly to their work.

Business Operations VBS006
Through 6 lessons, this module aims to provide the student with the building blocks in business planning and operations.  The module covers areas of business law, finance and financial management, business planning, and mistakes to avoid in business.  The module is driven from a financial perspective as this is primarily what business is about – making the investment, planning the financial outlay balanced against expected income, and making a profit on your activities.  The process of considering a business from a financial and operational perspective, coupled with students developing a (real or hypothetical) business plan will focus the student on the key areas which enable a business to maintain viability.

Marketing Foundations VBS109
Marketing Foundations is a 10 lesson module which seeks to provide the student with a broad range of knowledge in marketing.  The module looks at the what marketing is and how it works, with lessons explaining the different types of market, the importance of understanding a market place, and the marketing mix – the primary elements of product (features of the product or service), place (where the product or service is made available to customers), price (how much customers will pay for the product), and promotion (how customers find out about the product).  Knowledge in these areas will be critical to the success or failure of a venture.  Also understanding how to get to know your customers is important, and two lessons – on Customer Service and Market Research – provide students with the guidance of how to gather, asses and use information in these areas.  The module is completed with a lesson on business organisations, looking at law, financial management, business structures, and the terminology used in business.

The Elective Modules

Students are to select three Elective Modules from the following.

Instructional Skills BGN101
This is an 11 lesson module concerned with effective communication in a training or workplace environment.  The module considers the different ways to communicate and how to plan, deliver, and assess training.  Important factors in effective training are covered by lessons where students will learn how to determine training requirements in a workplace, how these should be delivered, understanding the needs of the learners and how to motivate them.  The trainer also needs to be capable of influencing the recipients of training – although motivation plays an important part to the success of training, a trainer may need to be able to persuade recipients to adopt an open or positive outlook in respect of proposed training or messages that they are trying to convey.  The module concludes with a lesson on the training of assessors and how to prepare trainees to meet the requirements of the competency standards for assessors.

Classroom Delivery Skills BGN106
Having the knowledge to share with others is one thing, but being able to educate them is another if your ability to share it is limited.  This module covers the key areas of effectively delivering the message.  Through 8 lessons, students will look at the principles of effective communication in the classroom and factors that may hinder this.  Communication is a two way process, the giver and the recipient both need to take part in the communication – the recipient needs to listen in order to hear the message, whilst the giver needs to listen to ensure that the recipient has understood the message.  The module looks at listening skills, obstacles that prevent proper listening and issues that may arise from this.  Lessons considering motivation, stress and conflict management and how to mediate and negotiate complete the skills covered by this module.  

Course Writing And Development BGN107
Learn from experts!  Comprising 8 lessons, this module looks at the basis of education and different methods used to deliver it.  We examine how courses are developed and the sorts of structure that can be adopted.  There are many areas to consider and which are covered by lessons including determining the levels of study or training and how these may be assessed, developing curriculum documentation, the availability of resources to support a course/training, how to create and develop course material and ensuring that it remains relevant.  The module concludes with lessons looking at accreditation, and then how to deliver education.  As with all of our modules each of lessons include tasks and assignments for students along with practical elements such as planning the implementation of a course.

Delivering Distance Education BGN108
This 9 lesson module is concerned with the delivery of distance education.  It covers the development and growth of the industry and the different forms of delivery.  Key to the success of students in their studies is the provision for their support and the services that can be offered.  Beyond supplying course materials, the education provider needs to consider the resources made available, and also how students will be assessed.  Other elements which support the overall proposition are ensuring good quality administrative cover (from advice, through enrolment, and record keeping), effective and consistent communication, and being able to provide support for graduates.

Educational Psychology BPS105
By understanding how people learn, you can become more effective in your approach to helping them to learn.  This 7 lesson module looks at the theories of development and learning.  Students will consider how people learn, how information is processed and how it is retained.  As student’s progress through the module, they will look at how to determine the needs of individuals, which coupled with their studies on how people learn will provide them with the necessary tools to be able to effectively tailor their methods for the benefit of the individual.  The right approach of course is important, and the module is concluded with a lesson on motivation which looks at different motivational theories and factors which may affect an individual’s motivation.

Workplace Project
To complete this qualification, you are also required to complete a workplace project lasting 200 hours.  

There are 4 options available to you to satisfy this requirement.  The options will be different dependent upon whether or not you currently work within the industry. The project can be work experience, voluntary experience, a project you carry out, other training you have already undertaken and there are other options. Don’t worry if you are not sure how to proceed at this stage, as your tutor will be there to discuss how to proceed and help you every step of the way.

How do you like to Learn?

The education industry is a service industry with a single aim:

"to help people learn".

Though the aim may appear straightforward, the task of educators is far from simple.  There are many reasons for this, not the least being that different people are more suited to learning in different ways.

Consider:

  • Auditory learners learn from what they hear.
  • Kinaesthetic learners learn by doing.
  • Visual learners learn by seeing an example or demonstration and watching.

Are you an auditory, a visual or a kinaesthetic learner?

Everyone is usually some of all three, but also has a preference within these as a style for learning.  Neuroscience and learning experts suggest that the best teaching and learning situations are when all three styles are combined together.  Each method reinforces the others and strengthens the learning Do you remember more things by pictures, photos what you saw in person, what someone showed you?  Do you remember more if you have heard someone or something say or play it?  Do you really need to get hands on and make it create it feel it, mix it, blend it yourself?

There are plenty of free online quizzes to help you work out what type of learner you are in these categories if you are not sure.

Visual learners love looking at pictures or diagrams.  They learn best with these graphs and also if you are taking notes add a little sketch or some colour to your notes.  You are not unusual in your style of learning as almost sixty present of learners are visual learners and generally therefore you should be able to remember around 75% of what you see. . Use mind maps to make study notes.  Flash cards with pictures on them as well as notes and any way you can represent your work as an image will help you remember.  Even taking, making or watching films and videos of the subject material or taking an excursion to see it will help visual learners.  Sit at the front of the class on a classroom so you get a close up of any pictorial information.  Sometimes having attractive and inspiring pictures around you will inspire you to study and learn better in the classroom or in your study space.

Using colour in your work and study notes also helps the visual learner to remember.  Use a variety of colours typeface or writing and highlighters coded to mean different things to you.  Use brightly colours picture and sketches to help visualise different point and combine these with different colour coded backgrounds that means something special to you.

Auditory learners if you are one of these learners you like to hear and absorb information better if someone says it, or if you yourself have the chance to talk about it.  Auditory learners are a smaller percentage of around 25-30% of all learners and again your recall if you are an auditory person should be about 70-75% of the subject.  Make sure you sit at the front of the class or near speakers so you can hear everything.  Teachers who can use anecdotal experience or stories about the learner will help it sink in for you.  Taking notes using a recorder, contributing yourself to the class with answers and questions will help you to remember.  Recording your notes or comments on your own voice recorder to play it back will help with remembering and learning.  Reading and reciting notes out loud will also help you to remember.  Also making up rhymes, mnemonics and jingles will also help, so too will adding in your own anecdotes to the notes.

Kinaesthetic learners like to act out, touch, feel their studies.  Kinaesthetic leaners often take up kinaesthetic careers, such as dancing, mechanics, sign language, hand ceramics, arts of some type.  Given the other components the kinaesthetic group of leaners are the final 5-10 % of the population.  Taking notes and even doodling on them helps these learners to engage and move as they learn.  Volunteer to act out or role play parts of the learning if you are one of these learners.  When you are studying move around as you read and study your notes.  Possibly ride as exercise bike as you read pages or walk around the neighbourhood listening to a recording of your notes as you learn.  Write out you notes in large print on a blackboard or screen so you can put your whole body into it.  Devise skits or short role plays of characters to remember your work.  Draw or create models of your learning as you study.  Study in small amounts with plenty of movement and activities in between, use a small hand stress ball to keep your hands busy as you study.  If possible get some practical experience in the field as a volunteer or helper in the area of you study, so you can actually live it as you learn!

How the Advanced Certificate is Assessed

The Advanced Certificate requires approximately 900 hours of study. It is made up of seven 100 hour modules and a workplace project lasting 200 hours

To pass the course –

  1. Pass all assignments on the seven 100 hour modules. There will be an assignment at the end of each lesson to submit to your tutor for marking and feedback.
  2. Pass seven examinations – one on each module. These are usually taken at the end of the module and can be arranged at a time and location to suit you.
  3. Complete a Workplace Project.  The project should last around 200 hours.  There are different options available to you to satisfy this requirement.  Don’t worry if you are not sure at this stage, your tutor will be there to help you every step of the way. This includes evidence of work experience or other studies or workshops, a research project or completion of Workshop I.

If you are not ready to study the Advanced Certificate in Applied Management (Instructional & Training Skills), then each of the modules listed here may be studied as stand alone courses.
