A Foundation Course - To Build Specialist Knowledge of Plant Sciences 

Botanists study plants - some as a passion, some as a job, others as a business and many for all three reasons.

Whatever your reason - this course is a an opportunity to learn about the biology of plants at a college or higher level.

It is an extensive plant science course - you will study  breeding and genetics through to soil management and climatology.

  • Work in science, agriculture, environmental management or horticulture.

  • Learn the fundamentals, and acquire a foundation for building specialist knowledge of plant sciences.

  • Explore and discover a plethora of career and business possibilities, working with plants.

  • Course Duration: Approximately 1,500 hours of self paced studies.

This course has been developed by, and you are taught by, an international team of plant scientists who have each built their own unique and distinguished career, from working with plants.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Associate Diploma in Botanical Science comprises 15 modules, as listed below.  Please click on each of the module titles for more details.

Note: Some modules may be swapped for other options, if appropriate and after consultation with an academic officer (e.g. Microbiology, Horticulture II, Deciduous Trees, Carnivorous Plants).

Workplace Project
To complete this qualification, you are also required to complete a workplace project lasting 200 hours.  

There are 4 options available to you to satisfy this requirement.  The options will be different dependent upon whether or not you currently work within the industry. The project can be work experience, voluntary experience, a project you carry out, other training you have already undertaken and there are other options. Don’t worry if you are not sure how to proceed at this stage, as your tutor will be there to discuss how to proceed and help you every step of the way.

Meet some of our academics

Timothy WalkerB.A.(Botany), RHS.M. Hort., Post.Grad.Dip.Ed. Former Director, Oxford Botanic Gardens.
Dr Lynette Morgan (Horticulture)Lyn worked with Rivendell Mushroom Farm between 1986 and 88; and then as a research assistant and technician for a few years while undertaking university studies. In 1991 she graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Horticultural Science (Hons) which covered broad horticultural sciences, as well as nursery vegetable and fruit production. Throughout the 90's she worked in both the nursery industry and horticultural crop production, before establishing her own business "Suntec" which has built an exceptional international reputation providing consulting services; particularly in hydroponic crop production. Dr Morgan has a broad expertise in horticulture and crop production, and a keen appreciation of the global scene. She travels widely as a partner in Suntec Horticultural Consultants, and has clients in central America, the USA, Caribbean, South East Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
Marie Beerman B.Sc.,M.Hort.Marie has been involved in horticulture since 2003. She completed a Masters degree in Horticulture at Hannover University in Germany in 2007, and has worked with ACS since 2011 She has co-authored of several ebooks including one on Roses and has a very sound knowledge and experience with horticultural science and research ranging from plant taxonomy and plant breeding to pest, disease and soil management.,
John Mason (Horticulturist)Horticulturist, Nurseryman, Landscaper, Garden Writer, Parks Manager and Consultant. Over 45 years experience; working in Australia and the UK. He is one of the most widely published garden writers in the world; author of more than 100 books and editor for 4 different gardening magazines. John has been recognised by his peers being made a fellow of the Institute of Horticulture in the UK, as well as by the Australian Institute of Horticulture.
