Are You A Tree or A Helicopter
We often hear about helicopter parents, but there are also helicopter managers and business leaders.
Business owners and managers often report how stressed they are, can’t trust their staff to do their job properly and so on. But is this because of the way they manage?
Helicopter managers will hover around above everyone, dropping bombs from a height telling people what they are doing wrong, or giving, what they consider, constructive criticism. But again this is from a height. Think of sitting in a plane and looking down on the landscape beneath. What you can see does not give you a picture of what is really going on down there. Unfortunately then, the helicopter manager may not have a clear picture of what is going on in their business.
The manager who acts like a tree is a far better prospect. A manager or business owner should be like the roots of a tree. They provide the energy for the tree to grow and develop, some staff develop into strong branches, strong and supportive to new branches and leaves coming along (more junior staff). The manager should be there to help their staff to do their jobs, to learn what needs to be done, then help newer staff to learn the job.
There is an old saying – Give a man a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed them for a lifetime. A manager should be teaching their staff what to do so that they can trust their staff to do a good job. Not keeping all the important tasks to themselves, then dropping bombs as their helicopter flies buy.
