Retail is not all doom and gloom

In the UK, the retail market is uncertain. Larger chain shops have been closing branches, but the retail market is not all doom and gloom.

Research by Local Data Company suggests that certain businesses are actually doing better at the moment.

Why might this have happened?

The Office for National Statistics in the UK says that 17.3% of all retail purchases are now completed online. This is a big fraction of the retail market. 

It is not therefore surprising that the businesses that are increasing in the high street are those that cannot be offered online. We can’t get a hair cut online or our nails done. We may be able to order pizzas or wine over the phone, but many people like going to a bar or restaurant to socialise. So the face to face businesses are those that are increasing in the high street.
