Counselling Careers

Are you thinking of becoming a counsellor?

Can I become a counsellor?

Consider, are you good at listening and do you have a passion for the welfare of others? If so, then yes, you can consider becoming a counsellor. Counsellors come from a wide range of backgrounds. They may have worked in health and social care professions, teaching, nursing, psychology, but also in totally unrelated fields, such as manufacturing and retail and would like a career change.

What do counsellors do?

Counsellors help people to overcome problems so that they can lead healthier happier lives. They do this by developing a trusting relationship with their clients through listening non-judgementally to their stories. Counsellors enable their clients to explore their issues and come up with their own solutions.

Some things counsellors deal with include relationship problems, stress, life crises, drug and alcohol problems, anger and emotional difficulties, trauma, and mild forms of anxiety and depression.

How do people become counsellors?

People go into counselling in a number of ways.

  • They may take a counselling course.
  • They may start voluntary work/paid work that includes training in counselling.

Depending on the area of counselling in which you work and the type of counselling you are doing, you may require qualifications.
